Church & School Construction Update

The church and school building in the village of Ambas-Pere is on schedule to be done by mid-December. This is home to 289 students of New Missions. Christmas this year will be celebrated in this new building to the glory of God!

After the ground breaking on October 6th, construction has continued at a busy pace. The foundation is secure and the walls are going up.

The entire building is 25 feet by 75 feet and will be our 22nd church and elementary school on the Leogane Plain in Haiti.

Please continue to pray for this project and the families that are impacted by this ministry.

Pray for Land

Currently in Haiti we purchase beans for our school food. We have the desire to purchase additional land to begin an agriculture program for growing black beans. On September 24, 2009, we received delivery of 400 55lb sacks of beans at the mission. The total cost was $12,000 U.S. dollars. Please pray with us for the purchase of land to grow black beans.

40ft Cargo Container Released From Customs

On Wednesday, August 5th, in Haiti the long-awaited moment came. Our 40ft cargo container was released from customs. The fee was $8,300. We shipped to Haiti construction supplies, chain link fencing, and supplies for the mission. A full report will come in our September newsletter. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Breaking News:
· The 22nd church New Missions is planting on the Leogane Plain will be in the village of Amber Per, a Voodoo stronghold.
· New Missions has released a new website www.newmissions.org
· Miracle Sunday is coming September 27, and you can host it at your church. Order a free Miracle Sunday kit now. This event features The Marie Chantal Story documentary.

Prayer Requests:
· Our 40-foot cargo container is still being held at customs in Haiti. Pray for a speedy release. We need these supplies for the construction of another school building.
· Pray for the planning of a Baptism Celebration in Haiti at all of our churches. This will give us the potential to baptize hundreds.
· We are in need of 5,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space in Orlando.

Praise reports:
· The past two mission teams to Haiti saw 282 personal decisions for Christ!
· The VBS at First Baptist Church of Orlando collected $4,958 to help provide rice for the children of Haiti. Read more at our blog.
· The VBS at First Baptist Church of Oviedo collected enough money to sponsor six children in Haiti for one year.
· This summer Fellowship Church Orlando collected 400 Christmas shoeboxes for the children of New Missions.

The World Needs Jesus

How many countries can fit into one room? 138 countries were represented during the International Pastors and Ministers Conference. David T. Demola, pastor and founder of Faith Fellowship Ministries World Outreach Center shared: "Every good thing will be opposed so be of good cheer." John 16:33 This year, Pastor David celebrates 50-years of ministry.

I attended the conference with my mother, Jeanne DeTellis. For decades churches from around the northeast have supported New Missions. What a joy it was to meet with numerous pastors and friends. Personally, I was inspired by the world-wide representation of pastors. During breakfast one day, I met pastors from central Russia, Sri Lanka, and Brunel. I spoke with pastors from Northern Ireland, Egypt, and India. The speakers continued to drive home the point that our ministries only have breath when we root all that we do in the Word of God.

The challenge churches face around the world is conditional truth. Yesterday, today, and forever our God never changes! In Haiti, we proclaim Jesus as the only way to salvation. In the Dominican Republic, we stand firm on the Word of God as truth. VBS At First Orlando Feeds the Children

This week at First Baptist Church of Orlando's VBS, the children collected offerings to help purchase rice for the children of New Missions. We are very thankful to their Children's Pastor David Holmes and Senior Pastor Dr. David Uth. This generous offering from children in the U.S. to the children of Haiti shows God's love from one child to another.

You are welcome to find sponsors for children in our schools who are waiting for a sponsor. This is a vital way in which you can personally help change the life of a child by connecting them with a new child sponsor. Jill Myers at our Orlando office will send you a welcome kit which will contain photographs of children waiting for a sponsor. You will be the only person with those photographs and I urge you to pray first on who you may know that could help make a difference in a child's life through the power of child sponsorship.

Math Teacher Multiplies Shoeboxes

Math teacher Sandy Mathews turned her passion for packing Christmas shoeboxes into an opportunity for students to put their school’s mission statement (...character before career; wisdom beyond scholarship, service before self, and participation as a way of life) into practice.

A LaCrosse, Wisconsin native, Mathews has been teaching for 18 years. For the past seven years, she has been teaching at The First Academy (TFA) in Orlando where she is now head of the Upper School Math Department and primarily teaches Algebra II and Pre-Calculus to 10th through 12th graders.

“In years past, TFA has encouraged the students to participate in the Christmas shoebox effort. It’s something everyone can participate in, and becomes a competition among grade levels,” said Mathews. When asked which grade usually wins, Mathews chuckles and says, “My students generally win every year. I am known at TFA for my enthusiasm with the Christmas shoeboxes.”

Usually the shoebox effort kicks into high gear in the fall and tops out with a packing party in November. However, Mathews is in high gear all year long, constantly buying shoebox items on clearance and raising money in her classroom.

“My cupboards at school are full,” says Mathews. “I buy things when I see them on sale. Recently, I saw wash cloths on clearance, and after Christmas I found socks and jump ropes for a quarter.”

Mathews gets creative in the classroom too, offering incentives to students to help reimburse herself for the items she buys throughout the year. She may sell candy or cupcakes for a quarter or fifty cents and allow the students to eat in class that day. Some students donate items for the shoeboxes while others choose to donate the cost of shipping several boxes.

“The participation comes in a variety of ways,” said Mathews. “When they see my enthusiasm and what I have stored in my cupboards, the students get enthused, too.”

That enthusiasm recently translated into the “off season” when several TFA students volunteered to help Mathews assemble nearly 200 shoeboxes on Good Friday. There was a great energy as the students arrived by 10:00 am (on their day off from school) to help assemble shoeboxes. The donated items were organized in the classroom: calculators, clothing, essential hygiene items, etc. The passion was contagious! The local Christian radio station, Z88.3 FM, was playing in the background and there was an excitement in the room. After the shoeboxes were packed, the students loaded them into cases and drove them to the New Missions office in Orlando.
